One of the most important events in the metalworking sector in Brazil, the Metalworking Industry Technology Trade Fair and Congress – Intermach, is bringing innovation to the trade fair segment in the southern region of Brazil by adopting sustainability practices. The event, which brings together companies, specialists and technological innovations, now has the specialized consultancy of the startup AKVO ESG. The challenge is to implement strategies aimed at reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, making the event more environmentally responsible.
The industry plays a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable future, and events in the sector take on the role of reflecting this responsibility by minimizing their environmental impacts. In Santa Catarina, a state with a strong industrial presence and a great diversity of production chains, sustainable initiatives are essential to ensure long-term competitiveness and innovation. In this context, Intermach 2025 is taking a leading role by integrating ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles into its structure.
For AKVO ESG’s technical director, Thomaz Tomazoni, the partnership with Messe Brasil at Intermach represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen the ESG agenda in the industrial sector. “Our mission is to guide companies and events on the journey towards sustainability and decarbonization. Intermach can become a beacon to engage industries in the ESG agenda, further boosting sustainability in the metal-mechanics sector, which is so essential and thriving in Santa Catarina,” says Tomazoni.
ACTIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The first step in the project will be to carry out a detailed inventory of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by the event. This includes all stages of the fair, from setting up stands to energy consumption, visitor travel and waste generation. With this data, it will be possible to neutralize the event’s carbon footprint through the purchase of carbon credits, supporting environmental projects in the region and the Amazon.
In addition to carbon neutralization, Intermach 2025 will adopt sustainable practices in line with the international standard ISO 20121, which establishes guidelines for sustainable events. This includes implementing measures to optimize resources, manage waste and encourage the circular economy within the event. The AKVO ESG team is conducting the data collection and mobilization of the various stakeholders involved, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of the fair’s decisions.
The director of Messe Brasil, Richard Spirandelli, argues that the initiative is in line with the strategies of the industry, which is continually seeking to improve its sustainability practices. “We are motivated to take this first step that will enable Intermach to contribute to a more sustainable future, where economic and social development go hand in hand,” he said.
With this initiative, Intermach 2025 is positioning itself as a pioneering industrial event in the adoption of sustainable practices, demonstrating that it is possible to unite innovation and environmental responsibility. By leading this movement, the fair is contributing to a sector that is more aware and aligned with the environmental and economic demands of the future.
